Critics’ scores and tasting notes
“Unwinding in the glass with notes of dark berries, cassis, plums mingled with hints of violet and pencil shavings, the 2025 Gruaud Larose is medium- to full-bodied, supple and suave, with a deep core of fruit, lovely energy and ripe, powdery tannins. Checking in at 13.5% alcohol, this blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc will bear a special gold label to commemorate the estate's 300th anniversary.”
Château Gruaud Larose is one of the great historic estates of the Médoc. The estate was passed down through the generations and is now run by the Merlaut family. Classified Deuxième Grand Cru in 1855, it has established itself as a benchmark of the Saint-Julien appellation. The vineyard covers approximately 82 hectares in a single block of deep Quaternary gravel over a clay-limestone subsoil. This configuration, combined with a favourable climate, ensures good soil drainage and even ripening of the grapes. The grape varieties are mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, with some Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The vines, planted at high density, contribute to the quality and concentration of the grapes. The estate is committed to an environmental approach, with conversion to organic farming and the adoption of biodynamically inspired practices aimed at preserving the natural balance of the vineyard. The wines of Château Gruaud Larose stand out for their structure, balance and aromatic complexity, reflecting the expression of the terroir and offering recognised ageing potential.
